Tones And I Will Release ‘New Music’ In 2020

Tones And I is entering unchartered territory in the U.K. The Aussie newcomer’s global hit “Dance Monkey” (Parlophone) is on track for an 11th week atop the Official U.K. Singles Chart, which would set a new record for the longest stint at No. 1 by a solo female artist.

“Dance Monkey” currently equals the record, held jointly at 10 weeks by Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” from 1992, and Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” from 2007.

“Dance Monkey” is on top of the Official Chart: First Look with a lead of less than 2,000 chart sales over Ellie Goulding’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s Christmas tune “River” (Polydor).

Tones’ monster hit has topped the charts in 20 countries, including Australia where it has ruled the national singles tally for a record 19 weeks. According to the team at Lemon Tree Music, the Australian artist management firm that also counts Tash Sultana and Pierce Brothers among its clients, Tones will release new music in 2020.

Christmas is warming up on the OCC’s First Look chart, which measures weekend sales and streaming activity. Among the holiday-themed records making an impact early in the chart week is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (Columbia), which springs to No. 5; Wham’s “Last Christmas” (RCA) at No. 7; “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl at No. 9 and John Legend’s cover of John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” at No. 10.

The Official U.K. Singles and Albums Charts are published late Friday local time.
