Is There Really a New SCREAM in the Works?
With blockbuster horror movies frequently dominating at the box office and meta-fiction going mainstream, it’s easy to forget how much the genre was dragging before Wes Craven changed the game by teaming up with writer Kevin Williamson for the 1996 self-referential slasher classic Scream.
A killer at the box office, it spawned three sequels (all directed by Craven), a hit TV series on MTV and VH1, plus countless imitators… and if you’re reading this, you probably know that already.
But now it appears that Ghostface
could be rising again soon.
Bloody Disgusting broke the news that Spyglass Media Group is currently developing a new Scream feature – which is not so surprising, considering the success of Blumhouse’s fresh take on Halloween and the revival of several other genre franchises. What we don’t know yet is whether the project is intended to be a sequel, a remake, or something else entirely.
Ghostface fans are sure to be a bit suspicious of this project, considering the prime movers of the franchise will not be involved; Craven passed away in 2015, and BD reports Williamson is not attached to the project (at least not yet). Regardless, it’s too early in the game to get too worked up.
So the answer to our
headline’s question is a pretty certain “yes,” but we’ve yet to learn what form
the new Scream will take… when we find out, we’ll let you know!
