Why you should have a beard? – Richard Sweeting
“Why don’t you shave?”
“You are never going to get a job”
There’s loads of good reasons on why you should sport a beard. We’ll go through them, obviously there’s loads and we can only cover a few.
1. Beards Suit You
Let’s face it, every one has different taste and every one dresses and looks different, for some, beards may just be their thing. Beards are perfect for baby faces and even for bald men, beards add something that I can’t just put my finger on. As long as your beard is groomed, you’ll look good without looking scruffy. .
There have been studies about beards and how beards influence and give you confidence. A well-groomed beard can lend you air of trustworthiness when someone is meeting you for the very first time. Their study found that those who were deemed to be least trustworthy were the beardless guys, or as they put it the ‘non-bearded face’. That makes sense, no bearded guy has ever harmed me…
If you think I was pulling your leg above then just have a google around, there’s plenty of other studies that look at the perception of beards. There was a 2012 study that found that mens with beard were perceived to have a high social status, more masculine and demonstrate greater confidence than their counterparts.
2. Beards Protect You
There was research undertaken that beards can block up to 95% of harmful UV Rays which are known for damaging and ageing skins. It also reduces the chance of you from contracting melanoma, a side note, check out the Jimmy Niggles Beard Campaign. The University College of London preliminary finding also found that they are responsible for tackling antibiotic resistances.
3. Beards at Work?
Beards are cool at work, there are two things at work that are super cool. 1) Vaping 2) Having a beard, what’s more cooler, than using a beard brush at your desk while you answer a colleague. That’s a proper power move right there!
There has been unfavourable bias towards men with beards, so much so, a freelancer began to photoshop a beard in his photographs to improve his success rate. He actually went on to get more jobs and calls back as a result of his beard. It’s hard to say whether it was the beard, but he notices a lot more positives answers having added a beard.
Obviously there are some roles where health and safety or other reasons demand either no beard or a shorter beard, you’ll need to abide, but they cannot discriminate if your beard is for religious reasons as per the equality act.
4. Beards are hot!
9/10 girls told us they dig beards, before anyone clever says, did you ask your mum? No, we went to Oxford Street and asked multiple women, all of whom were not paid for their answer!
It’s obviously down to preferences and people change their notion of beauty in their life, obviously we’ll be a little bias towards men with beards but they add something more to your face and that can only be a good thing.
The University of New South Wales undertook a study asking 351 women to rate men, all of whom had facial hair of different lengths. Their conclusion was that these 351 women had a better reception to the men with stubble were the most handsome and 177 women were receptive to the men with full-on beards. The women across the board thought that men with full beards had the best potential for parenthood and masculinity. The men with no facial hair did not fair well in this category.
5. Beat Winter Like a Boss
It get’s seriously cold in the winter, we got beanie hats for our heads, gloves for our hands, what about our face, well if you have a beard, you’re in luck!
So will you keep your beard?
At the end of the day, you need to take a real hard look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, is a beard what I really want. If it’s not, that’s ok too. Just make sure you do what you like & what gives you confidence.
