Wolgast’s Backstory Will Be Explored — MPG Interview – Hollywood Life

‘The Passage’ is ramping things up in its first season, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar spoke EXCLUSIVELY with HL about what’s ahead, including Wolgast’s backstory and his character’s ‘purpose’ from here on out.

From trying to save Amy to staying away from virals, Wolgast has his hands full on The Passage. Characters like Shauna and Carter have gotten major backstory episodes, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar told HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that episode 7 is a big one in terms of Wolgast’s backstory with not just Lyla but Richards, too. Richards and Wolgast have been at odds this season, and MPG said it’s a “constant push pull with them throughout the entire season.” He continued: “We get a bit of their backstory, along with Wolgast, Lyla, their daughter, and the tragic occurrence that happened with her. But we get all of that in episode 7, so all of that comes in and then there’s some more push and some more pull.”

Lyla has had mostly separate storyline from Wolgast in the first episodes of season one, but she will cross paths with Wolgast again very soon.”She’ll definitely come back into the fold and be a huge figure in trying to save Amy,” Mark-Paul teased. “Which is a little bit of a departure from the books, but I think people will still appreciate it.”

During the Feb. 4 episode, Shauna got into Amy’s head for the first time and planted the idea that Wolgast may turn away from Amy once her transformation is complete. Amy hasn’t told Wolgast about this yet. “I think what that’s all leading to is that she’s changing, and she’s just afraid that I won’t accept her,” Mark-Paul said. Fanning, a.k.a. Patient Zero, has gotten into Wolgast’s head once already, and Mark-Paul said that this will happen again “but with a different character… That’s a really fun scene, it’s kind of a throwback to the book in a way, but it’s with a different viral.”

Throughout the rest of the season, Mark-Paul sad that “it all becomes about Amy from here on out. It all becomes his purpose to save Amy.” He also revealed that Wolgast will realize towards the end of the season that Amy is “more powerful than she knows and everyone is trying to convince her that she can fight him in a way that will cause Fanning to fear her.” In the pilot episode, Amy uttered this omen: “This is how the world ends.” The situation is going to get worse before it gets better on The Passage. “It gets f**ked up, for lack of a better term, it’s gonna get f**ked up,” he said.

Amidst all the chaos, the show still manages to find light moments between Wolgast and Amy. “It’s amazing what Liz [Heldens] was able to accomplish. She was able to find levity in really dark scenes with really dark undertones and characters and still find the levity with this child and this paternal figure,” Mark-Paul said. The Passage airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on FOX.
