Concerns raised about the Dyson Airwrap sucking people’s hair out

Dyson Airwrap — critics say it should be called the ‘hairwrap’ because that’s what is likely to happen to you……

Concerns have been raised by hairdressing experts about the new Dyson Airwrap sucking people’s hair out.

The Dyson Airwrap is the vacuum cleaner company’s latest product that claims to dry, smooth, straighten and curl hair by using different attachments and the ‘Coanda’ effect — which is apparently named so because both hands are required to remove the device’s nozzle from your head when you can feel your hair’s roots being torn from its follicles.

Dyson’s Head of Hair Loss, Mr. Al O’Pecia said, “Our new Airwrap is a styling tool that has been engineered to create curls, waves and smooth blow dries without the use of extreme heat. It aims to be a versatile tool which styles hair without damaging it, although admittedly you may find that large clumps of it get sucked from your head if you don’t consume enough Vitamin D in your diet. Over the past six years we’ve spent £24 million and 230 engineers have worked on the product, with only 60% of them now being in need of regular hair transplant treatment.”

Scientists say that The Coanda effect occurs when a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface and due to the differences in pressure, the air flow attaches itself to the surface — which is why it is not advised that the Airwrap is used unless you have somebody with you that has a very strong grip to help you remove it from your head (see image above).

Early reviews of the product from shoppers have been particularly positive online, with one person stating: “Bit pricy but it’s a dryer, tongs and straightener in one I guess and the fact that it’s almost impossible to remove from your head once all your hair gets sucked into it means that it can probably be used as a vacuum cleaner for the floor as well — in fact it looks suspiciously similar to my Dyson V6 if I’m to be truly honest with you.”

“Harnessing the power of Dyson’s digital motor, we have engineered a unique styling tool which prevents extreme heat damage when styling. The damage is instead likely to come from the fact that most people’s hair isn’t able to withstand the sucking force of our Dual Cyclone suction technology in the same way that a household carpet is,” Mr. O’Pecia added.
